Abstract. The report examines the general issues of the emergence of such a unique human phenomenon as the “nation” and its connection with the abstract human thinking. Two main factors that positively influence the formation of national consciousness are identified as education and language. And two indirect factors are analyzed, which directly affect the implementation of two main factors in the formation of national consciousness: nationally oriented state power and the ability of the country’s population to create this kind of power. In conclusion, the author shows situation in which the process of formation of Belarusians as a nation is currently taking place.
